Hōkōbō Spring is a radon-bearing, weakly radioactive simple thermal water (hypotonic, alkaline, low-temperature). Mineralization is light at 224.5 mg/kg — gentle on the body — and the pH of 8.7 puts it squarely in Japan's alkaline beauty-water family with a slippery feel on the skin. At the source the water is colorless and clear with a faint rotten-egg note from hydrogen sulfide, and radon at 144 Bq/kg places it in the so-called hormesis tradition.

About

Nadeshiko-no-yu is a day-use radium spring bathhouse attached to a small 16-room ryokan-style stay in the hills west of Kobe. The on-site spring feeds several distinct baths you move between: a lukewarm pool meant for long, easy soaking, a hotter indoor bath, a cool mineral bath, and an open-air bath outdoors among trees. There's also a carbonated bath alongside the radium water, two saunas (one with scheduled steam sessions, one a gentler nanomist sauna), and a wheelchair-accessible private bath. The water is colorless with a faint sulfurous smell and is kept flowing rather than treated; staff suggest cycling through the zones hot to cool rather than soaking in just one. Overnight guests get a quieter indoor bath of their own in the mornings, and there's a source-fed foot bath out on the grounds. The place is a few minutes' walk from Taisanji (太山寺), the only National Treasure temple in Kobe, and the guest rooms look out over mountains and a river.
