Classification
Sodium Bicarbonate-Sulfate-Chloride spring
A sodium-led bicarbonate spring with sulfate and chloride layered in, drawn very hot at 72.8 °C — among Japan's hottest natural sources. The pH is neutral so the touch is unforced, but an unusually high 348 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves the kind of silica film associated with Japan's beauty-water family. At the source the water carries a very faint yellow-brown tint and a touch of turbidity, giving it visible body.

429. Kurokawaso, Kurokawa Onsen (pt.1 - general information and conclusion) ★★★
Stayed overnight. It is located 10 minutes west of the center of Kurokawa, on the way to the river there is an additional area with lanterns during the season. I booked a double dinner and breakfast, served in a separate room with standard chairs overlooking bamboo. I had a regular room reserved, but that day it was snowing and many people couldn't make it to Kurokawa. So I was given a free upgrade to a room in a separate cottage with two private baths. Each guest can reserve one of the three private baths, but at my request, all three private baths were reserved for me at no extra charge. In addition to the free bonuses, the service was also high quality, everything was clearly explained, my requests were understood in English and responded to immediately. The upgraded room was in a cottage. Spacious, lots of room. The beds were standard for two (in my original booking I had such beds, apparently the upgrade was similar).
The ryokan has two bath blocks: only for guests and available for day use. Each block has a rotation of male/female bath zones, and each zone has an indoor and an outdoor bath. Thus, there are 8 main outdoor and indoor baths (if staying overnight), plus 3 private baths in the ryokan, plus 2 private baths in the room (if you take such a room). In total, for a stay at the ryokan, you can visit 13 baths.
The designated bath area is available for day use usually from 10:30 to 21:00, sometimes only on several weekends during the week. It is included in the Kurokawa tegata (bath pass).
This is the most extensive ryokan in Kurokawa by the number of available baths in one facility - 13 baths. It is very logical to choose this one for accommodation, as it is easier to track the male/female bath rotations in one place, and there is a unique set of baths only for guests. A very cool place, and combined with the bonuses and service provided to me - beyond praise.

For higaeri they only let you into one rotenburo and the Family Bath. Judging by photos, they also have a large, impressive rotenburo but only for overnight guests.
The higaeri rotenburo has a large wooden bath in the changing area. Shower available. From the rotenburo itself you see rocks (visible in photos) and trees. There's a river behind the fence, but you can't see it.
Overall nothing special. Located a bit away from the main village. If you're going to Sanga or Konoyu, you can grab this one along the way; otherwise, you can skip it.
