Classification

Sodium-Calcium Bicarbonate spring

A hot simple thermal spring (71.1 °C, neutral pH) — light in mineralization at 673 mg/kg dissolved solids, yet rich in metasilicic acid (195.7 mg/kg). Colorless and clear at the wellhead; by 24 hours after sampling the water has taken on a faint yellow-brown tint and a mild mineral note. The silica leaves the kind of thin film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother — the source sits squarely in the Japanese 'beauty-water' family.

About

A facility specializing in a variety of family baths. It is about a 5-minute drive from Beppu Interchange, making access convenient. Surrounded by the greenery of trees in a rich natural environment, the bath tubs are diverse, made of stone, rock, cypress wood, and more. There are open-air baths, semi-open-air baths, and indoor baths. Detached baths arranged like bungalows allow you to relax without worrying about neighbors, and there are also row-house type baths. Each family bath has a different atmosphere, so you will want to visit many times and soak in various types of baths. Of the 10 rooms, 2 are free-flowing hot spring baths, and 8 are coin-operated baths. You can fully enjoy fresh water just for yourself with the coin-operated baths, as well as the benefits of the free-flowing hot spring baths.

We were lucky — a rotenburo was available. It was very large, beautifully decorated, with a roof and lighting. We didn't need to fill the water ourselves, everything was already filled, but you could freely adjust the temperature. We added cold water and I was surprised at how quickly such a large bath cooled down.

154. Beppu Ohirayama Onsen OKATANOYU An onsen that only offers private baths. 10 to choose from, prices from 1500 to 2500 yen. The nearest one was 1500 - took that one. Stamp available. When they led me to my bath, it turned out the tub was empty and I needed to fill it myself (not sure if all their baths are like this). To do that, you drop a special token and onsen water pours from a large pipe. You can also mix hot water labeled as onsen with cold (obviously tap) water from a faucet. The onsen water was clear and very hot. Without diluting with cold water, sitting in would've been impossible. Breathing inside the room was good. Solid place - really cool experience filling the water yourself, and the bath selection is interesting too.
