About

On the bank of the Kurobe River, hot water seeps up through the gravel naturally. Visitors dig into the riverbed and stack stones to form their own soaking spot or footbath (rotenburo, 露天風呂). There are no facilities at all: no changing room, no washing area, bring your own towel. In practice most people use it as a footbath, since full immersion in this open spot calls for a swimsuit. Getting here means riding the Kurobe Gorge Railway (Kurobe Kyokoku Tetsudo, 黒部峡谷鉄道) to Kanetsuri Station (鐘釣駅) and then walking down a stairway to the riverbank, about 10 to 15 minutes.
