Hoshokaku sits on a hill above Takayama's old town, a short walk from the historic streets below. The communal baths are split into women's Tennyo-no-yu (天女の湯) and men's Sennin-no-yu (仙人の湯), each with an indoor bath and open-air stone bath. The outdoor stone baths are filled with local onsen water (heated and recirculated); the indoor baths use regular water. Eleven rooms on the top floor have their own private open-air bath with city views.
