A hot (61 °C) sodium bicarbonate spring — the classic jūsō-sen style, soft on the skin. Alkaline at pH 8.5, it sits comfortably in Japan's beauty-water family. A generous 256 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves the kind of silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother afterwards. The brown clear water is the signature look of a plant-derived moor spring.

371. Tsurumaru Onsen, Tsurumaru, Kagoshima ★ I went for the day-use bath for ¥300, an old-school place. Day-use is listed from 06:00 to 20:30. They stamp the Kyushu 88 Onsen stamp rally. Inside there are two baths. The water is clear dark brown, and the temperatures are 41.5 in one bath and 47 in the other. It is comfortable to breathe. The small door in the corner turned out not to be an emergency exit, but a way out to the outdoor area, where there is a square rotenburo. Unfortunately, I only found that out after my visit, so if you go without preparing, check all the doors in the indoor baths. A place with atmosphere and an extremely hot bath. Next time I am here, I will stop by again to check out the old-school rotenburo. 09.01.2025
