About

Goshogake Onsen (後生掛温泉, ごしょうかけおんせん) sits alone in the Hachimantai National Park at around 1,000 meters, with steam rising from the volcanic valley behind it. The large bath hall has seven distinct bath types: a mud bath (doroyu, 泥湯), a box steam bath (hakamushi-yu, 箱蒸し湯) where you sit enclosed while steam fills the cabinet, an open-air bath, an indoor bath, a waterfall bath (utaseyu, 打たせ湯), a steam sauna, and an aerated tub. All are kakenagashi (かけ流し), kept flowing fresh from the source. The water is cloudy and grayish with a sulfur smell. A separate ondol (温熱床, geothermal heated-floor room) is available by reservation for a longer warm-down. The inn itself has appeared in manga by Tsuge Yoshiharu and in the film "Thermae Romae II".
