A calcium- and sodium-led sodium chloride spring, richly mineralized at roughly 21 g/kg of dissolved solids and classified as hypertonic. At the wellhead the water is faintly yellow and slightly turbid, strongly salty with an oily odor and visible gas evolution. Because the source emerges below 25 °C as a cold-mineral spring, it is reheated for bathing.

Ganbanyoku

About

Men's and women's sides each have their own large indoor bath and outdoor bath, plus a sauna, and women also get two kinds of ganbanyoku (岩盤浴) rock bed sauna. On weekends, a tent sauna runs in the men's outdoor bathing area. The spring water is a mild, simple onsen, easy on the skin rather than heavily mineral. The bathhouse sits inside a themed old town quarter, machiya (町屋), near Kunozan Toshogu shrine, with restaurants, a Tokugawa Ieyasu museum, a headset-free immersive theater, and a live house filling out the street. Two lodges share the grounds, Shogun no Yu Kunozan Honjin (将軍の湯 久能山本陣) and the newer Tokugawa no Okuzashiki Kunoyado (徳川の奥座敷 久能宿), which opened in 2024 with rooms that have their own half-open-air bath and an irori (囲炉裏) hearth.
