Composition fingerprint

CationsAnions
Sodium Na⁺
salt's cation — pairs with chloride to make the water salty.
Bicarbonate HCO₃⁻
"soda" — softens skin, leaves it smooth.
Known good for
  • Smooth skindry, rough skin
  • Recoveryfatigue, stress

A sodium-led bicarbonate spring, posted under its older classification name meaning "soda water containing common salt" — jūsō-sen in the traditional vocabulary. The bicarbonate gives the soft, smooth feel that places it in Japan's beauty-water family, while chloride, running to a little over 40 percent of the anion balance, adds a salty edge that helps warmth linger on the skin. Moderately mineralized rather than sharp, and the posted indications track the chemistry: chronic skin conditions, wounds and burns, alongside neuralgia and chronic rheumatoid arthritis.

718. Hotel Aile, Beppu ★ Stayed overnight, no day-use available. Not included in Beppu Onsen-do - they don't stamp the 88 onsen pilgrimage book. Located in the pier area near Beppu Tower, about 7-10 minutes on foot from the station. Cozy hotel. Japanese staff. Inside, informational leaflets and inserts are decorated with images of a cute local mascot. There was a cool story here. In the hotel lobby, there was a set of books and magazines on the onsen theme. They started checking us in - a man was handling me, and a woman was handling my companion. While the check-in was in progress, I began flipping through one magazine, and it literally featured the Beppu onsens we had visited that morning. At some point, I came across a page describing Beppu Onsen-do with a photo of a black towel. I showed this page to the man at reception, then took out my own black Meijin towel from my shopper bag. The man looked at it, turned to the woman, and asked, "Are they Japanese?" The woman, holding our passports, replied, "Apparently not." Outdoor wooden bath. Standing, you can see buildings, the bay, and mountains; sitting in the bath, you see the sky and a mountain. The water is slightly cloudy with a brown tint, with a bit of fine lime on the surface. Temperature about 41°C. Indoor bath. The water is slightly cloudy with a brown tint. Temperature about 41.5°C. Comfortable to breathe inside. A cozy place with a pleasant onsen. Competition for interesting accommodation in this pier area is very high, but it's worth keeping this hotel in mind. 03.01.2026 - 04.01.2026
