Hisui-no-Yu sits in Itoigawa, Niigata, and draws its water from a fault running the length of Japan. The spring is salty with a faint petroleum-like scent that surprises first-timers but is quite characteristic of this type of water. The outdoor bath looks out toward the Northern Alps, the indoor bath runs hot, and there are also a jet bath, a reclining bath, a waterfall shower, and a sauna circuit with a cold plunge. Private baths are available for those who want a quieter soak. The crowd is almost entirely local, which gives the whole place a relaxed, neighborhood feel.
