Classification

Sodium spring

A simple thermal spring at Hirano on the shore of Lake Yamanaka, pumped to the surface and sitting on the alkaline side at roughly pH 9, which gives it the slippery feel of Japan's beauty-water family. Lightly mineralized at 176 mg/kg, it is colorless, clear, tasteless, and odorless — gentle and unassuming on the skin. The source emerges at 29.2 °C, a cold-mineral-range temperature, so it is reheated for bathing.

About

Ishiwari no Yu (石割の湯) sits at the foot of Ishiwari-yama (石割山) near Lake Yamanaka. The building itself is worth noting: a timber dome built from locally grown chestnut and hinoki cypress, with traditional exposed-beam construction that earned an award from the Yamanashi prefectural forestry agency. Inside, there are large indoor baths, a reclining bath (neyu, 寝湯), and a cool source bath (gensen nuruyyu, 源泉ぬる湯). Two open-air baths sit outside: one carved from rock, the other lined in hinoki cypress. The water comes out naturally smooth and slightly slippery on the skin. Dry sauna is available in both sections.

165. Yamanakako Hirano Onsen ISHIWARI-NO-YU, Yamanashi Onsen on the east side of Yamanakako, not very convenient to get to/from. Inside there's a cafe for snacking, a rest area, a merch shop, and vegetables. They stamp the Yamanashi 100 Onsen book. Inside there's a large bath with three jets, plus a separate lying area for three. Clear water, hot temperature. Breathing inside is comfortable. There's a sauna and a cold bath. Outside there are two baths in different spots. One is a small stone bath, clear water, temperature between warm and hot. The second outdoor bath is larger, rectangular. The water there was more like just warm, also clear. Nice homey place, but getting there by public transport is a pain.
