下呂温泉(幸田ポンプ所)

Gero Onsen (Koda Pump Station)
Sampled at wellhead
Simple

An alkaline simple thermal spring drawn from Gero Onsen's Koda pump station, sitting at pH 9.4. The high alkalinity gives the slippery, soft-on-the-skin feel of Japan's beauty-water family, while the simple-thermal classification means a gentle, low-mineralization soak overall.

About

The hotel runs two separate bath floors. On the 8th floor, an open-air cypress bath looks out over Gero (下呂) town and the surrounding mountains; by night the lights of the hot-spring district spread below. The 2nd floor has a second set of baths with a jacuzzi and sauna. The spring water is notably smooth on the skin. Some suites come with a private open-air bath. Day visitors are welcome.

59. Armeria Hotel Kusakabe, Gero Onsen Stayed overnight. But judging by ads at the station, higaeri is also available here, though apparently for a fee since it wasn't listed in the tegata booklet. Kaiseki was very delicious, the hotel has a cool "elevator" and a location on a hill. Shuttle buses run regularly. I think the price was very good for a place like this. Baths are located on the top floor and on the lower floor. 1. Upper section: 1.1. Indoor bath with hot+ water. 1.2. Outdoor round bath. Water temperature slightly lower than the indoor bath. 1.3. Outdoor rectangular bath with the best evening view of Gero. Also has two spots for lying down. Water temperature slightly lower than the indoor bath. 2. Lower section: 2.1. Indoor main bath with utaseyu (waterfall bath). Water temperature is hot. 2.2. Indoor jacuzzi bath. Temperature is hot. 2.3. Indoor cold water bath. 2.4. Small outdoor simple bath with no view. Temperature slightly lower than the indoor baths. There's also a sauna. Water everywhere is clear, smell is mild. I consider it a must-visit in Gero — either for an overnight stay (great price) or higaeri. The evening view is spectacular and the bath is perfect for it.
