A simple sulfur spring carrying the unmistakable rotten-egg note of hydrogen sulfide. Alkaline pH 9.4 gives the water a slippery, beauty-water feel on the skin, with a faint H2S aroma rising at the bath inlet. Hot at 44.5 C and lightly mineralized at 254 mg/kg total solute, the body of the water stays gentle while the sulfur note carries the character.
651. Hotel Nagisaya, Nachikatsuura, Wakayama ★★
Visited for day use at 1100 yen. Day use available from 16:00 to 21:00. The path to the ryokan goes through a tunnel that looks very atmospheric in the evening. They sell the 12 Onsen of Wakayama stamp book. The outdoor and indoor baths are in separate locations. The indoor bath alternates daily between men and women.
Large outdoor stone bath. Not much of a view when sitting (surrounded by rocks and plants), but standing you can see the bay and mountains. Very cozy in the evening. Clear water, temperature 39.5-40.
First version of the indoor bath (by gender rotation). Looks rough and worn in places, there's an aquarium with live fish in the room visible from the bath. There's a window view of the bay, but details weren't visible due to the evening time. Clear water, temperature 41.5-42. Very high humidity, but breathing inside is fine.
Second version of the indoor bath (by gender rotation). Very similar to the first and also with an aquarium, but slightly smaller and mirrored. Clear water, temperature 41. Very high humidity, but breathing inside is fine.
Great rotenburo and a rare touch with the aquarium — recommended for a visit.
