Reachable only on foot through the Oku-Kinu mountains, Nikko Sawa Onsen sits at the end of a two-hour trail and feels 70% mountain hut, 30% inn. The outdoor mixed bath (rotenburo, 露天風呂) draws from a sulfur-sodium-chloride spring, and the remoteness is very much the point.
