Classification

Sodium-Magnesium Bicarbonate-Chloride spring

A hot (52 °C) sodium-and-magnesium bicarbonate-chloride spring. Weakly alkaline and soft on the skin, it sits in Japan's beauty-water family, layering bicarbonate softness over the heat-retaining body of a chloride source. A generous 201 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves the kind of silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother afterwards.

129. Kagaya, Beppu Visited for day-use bathing, listed as available from 11 to 16. They stamp both the Beppu onsen-do passport and the 88 Onsens of Kyushu booklet. For 500 yen you choose one of three private baths. I tried all three. Water in all of them is the same: clear and extremely hot - impossible to fully get in without diluting. The best atmosphere was the stone bath - the outdoor and square ones are fairly standard private baths. Breathing in the stone one is surprisingly comfortable, in the square one breathing is good. Recommended specifically for the stone bath for its atmosphere, the other two can be skipped. And of course for those who want it hot (as long as nobody dilutes it before you get there).
