About

Houreinoyu sits at the foot of Waita-san (涌蓋山) in Kumamoto's Aso District, drawing water from a free-flowing artesian spring (kakenagashi, 源泉かけ流し) with a milky white-blue color said to be unique even among the surrounding hot spring area. The main communal outdoor baths, separated by gender, look out over the mountain. Private family baths come in three types: cypress rotenburo, open-air rock baths, and indoor rock baths, with the latter two available around the clock. A jigoku-mushi (地獄蒸し, geothermal steam cooking) area lets you steam your own food while you wait for a soak. Both day visitors and overnight guests are welcome.
