A naturally sulfur-bearing simple thermal source, blending the village's #1 and #2 wells in Totsukawa. Alkaline (pH 8.9) and hypotonic, with a soft, slippery feel and a recognizable faint sulfur note at the wellhead. Lightly mineralized — total dissolved solids just 236 mg/kg — yet free sulfide species (HS) reach about 5 mg/kg, enough to qualify as a true sulfur spring under the Japanese classification.

About

One of the two village bathhouses at Tosenji Onsen (湯泉地温泉), a little off Route 168 on the bank of the Totsukawa river. It is a plain little place: a small indoor tub with a handful of washing spots, and outside an open-air bath of natural stone with wide sky overhead and the river running below. The water is clear alkaline sulfur, slightly slippery on the skin, with a light smell that doesn't follow you home, and it runs straight through with nothing recycled. Tosenji is the oldest of Totsukawa's three springs and the only sulfur one. No restaurant, no lounge, just the bath, with a few woven hats (kasa, 笠) by the door for soaking in the rain.

613. Izumiyu, Tosenji Onsen, Totsukawa, Nara ★ Onsen for 600. Operating hours stated as 10:00 to 20:00 (closed Tuesdays). They stamp the 88 Onsen of Wakayama booklet. Outdoor stone bath. View of the river and forest, but the fence is quite bulky and obstructs the view from inside the bath. Clear water, slight smell. Temperature was 46 one day and 42 the other. Indoor bath. Clear water, slight smell. Temperature was 41 one day and 44 the other. Breathable inside. A solid onsen. If the rotenburo fence were smaller or absent, it would be really cool, but it's still worth a stop when visiting Tosenji Onsen. Not sure what's up with the temperature swinging so much between days. 14.06.2025 15.06.2025
