About

Tabi no Yu sits well up in the mountains above Kirishima, a mix of campsite, log cabins, and thatched cottages built around a shared onsen bathhouse. The indoor bath is built from rock rather than tile, with an open-air tub outside and a cold plunge to finish. One highlight is the mist sauna, made from the spring's own steam rather than dry heat, and the whole washing area tends to carry a faint sulfur smell. One of the thatched cottages has its own private open-air bath, which can also be reserved by the hour. The place started out as Nonoyu Onsen and still feels like it: wooden buildings patched by hand over the years, a campsite open to walk-ins, and dinner grilled over charcoal at an old hearth-style corner. On a clear night the baths look out toward Sakurajima, the airport, and Mt. Kaimon.
