A blended source at Umegashima Onsen classified as a simple sulfur spring. At pH 9.76 it is strongly alkaline, giving the water a pronounced slippery feel, and at the source it carries a faint greenish-yellow tint with the unmistakable faint rotten-egg note of H₂S. With 65.4 mg/kg of metasilicic acid, it leaves skin feeling smooth.

About

The oldest and largest of the Umegashima inns. There are two big baths, Tokiwa no Yu (常磐の湯) and Choju no Yu (長寿の湯), and set inside the larger one is a small barrel tub, Kin no Yu (金乃湯), that takes the sulfur spring completely untouched. Two private baths round it out, one cut back into the rock (ana-buro, 穴風呂) and one of stone. The baths stay open around the clock, which is really the point of a place like this: you can get up at three in the morning and go back in.

283. Baikunro, Umegashima ★★ I went for a day visit for ¥500, listed as 11:00~15:00, but it may randomly be closed. I got in on my second try. They stamp the Shizuoka 60 onsen 24/25 rally. A legendary ryokan that a couple of years ago was booked out entirely for an expat onsen trip. It was really fun to be in a place I had already heard stories about before the onsen rally. After a call from the prefectural office, the owner was waiting for me, greeted me very warmly, shook my hand three times, and we exchanged gifts. He also wrote me a handwritten letter for my next day-visit onsen, where I was supposed to complete the stamp rally achievement. Inside there is a bath with clear water, temperature 35. Next to it is a barrel with clear water and flakes, temperature 36. The air inside is easy to breathe. There are two private baths: - a small private cave bath, clear water, temperature 37; - a small private bath, clear water, temperature 37. If you end up in this village, then because of its special status you should either come for a day visit to the ryokan or stay overnight. 14.11.2024
