Classification

Sodium Chloride spring

A sodium chloride cold-mineral spring that is also markedly iodine-rich. The salty, heat-retaining chloride water is moderately to richly mineralized at 9,050 mg/kg of dissolved solids, leaving a mineral film on the skin. Because the source emerges below 25 °C, it is a cold-mineral spring heated for bathing. With iodide at 22.2 mg/kg the water belongs to the iodine-bearing family and tends to discolour on contact with air.

西武秩父駅前温泉 祭の湯 The water is pumped from 2000m depth and heated. Very salty. Onsen water only in the rotenburo (42°C); indoor baths use tap water: one strongly carbonated CO2, the other a silk bath, both 40°C. There's a cold bath, jet bath, two saunas — a hotter regular one and a salt sauna at 60-62°C. Outside, besides the onsen-water rotenburo, there's a silk bath, two one-person barrel baths, and a row of shallow (5-7cm deep) reclining baths with headrests. There's massage, a large chill zone with TV recliners, and a tatami room. Restaurant. Overall the atmosphere is very pleasant, especially in the rotenburo. Quite crowded but quiet and peaceful. Not a 100% true onsen, but I liked it — went two evenings in a row.
