Kumonosuke is the elevated open-air bath station that belongs to the Tokiwakan ryokan at Hishino hot spring in Nagano, reached by a short ride on the ryokan's own mountain cable car from the main building. The baths are kept simple: an open-air infinity-edge bath built in wood and open to the sky, an indoor stone bath for days when the weather turns, and a cool plunge pool for switching temperatures. The spring water itself is clear and colorless, a mild alkaline water that feels soft on the skin. At about 1,050 meters, the small rest deck and cafe look out over the surrounding forest and mountains, with local craft beer and juices to enjoy after bathing. The cable car ride, just over a minute rattling through the trees, is as much a part of the visit as the bath itself.
