486. Akamatsu onsen, Oita ★ A peculiar onsen for 400. Operating hours are 10:00 to 21:00 (closed Tue). They stamp the 88 Kyushu Onsens passport. Bath photos from the internet, matches reality. The place looks like it was generated by a neural network: an onsen, a warehouse, a dog kennel, palm trees, and birds all crammed together. Some castle in cherry blossoms in the distance. As if the owners tried every business they could think of and just dumped it all in one spot. Inside the warehouse there's a three-level stone bath. Water is clear, slightly soapy. Temperature by level: 46, 43, 38. There's also a fourth cold bath. Very strange and unusual place, but that's exactly what makes it memorable and interesting. 05.04.2025
