Kamenoi Hotel Tazawako A pleasant place, about a 1 to 1.5 hour walk from the main spots in Nyuto Onsen, we walked there on foot, for example, for a day trip to Tsuru-no-yu, and part of the way can be covered by bus. The locals scare people a lot with bears, saying they have become much more active lately. Sulfate-hydrogen carbonate calcium-magnesium-sodium water containing sulfur (hydrogen sulfide type), it feels a little colder than usual, but in summer that is actually a plus. The rotenburo and indoor baths are located in different parts of the hotel, there are no showers in the rotenburo, but there are showers in the indoor baths. The bath photos from the internet match. The rooms are somewhat tired, you can feel a Showa-era vibe, but nothing critical. Most of the staff are Japanese, and they really try hard. Breakfast and dinner are buffet style, quite good. Free morning shuttle to Tazawako Station, with advance booking. I am not really a fan of concrete hotels, but this one worked for me, it somehow has an indefinable appeal... 03.07.2026

Stayed at Plaza Hotel Sanrokuso near Tazawako. https://maps.app.goo.gl/SgxcKrwwrtV6FuZj7 There's a large indoor bath and a rotenburo that opens into the forest. The corridor to the rotenburo (photo) and the changing room are very cold — basically outdoors. At -6°C some people would come in and be like "nope, I'm not undressing here" and leave. So I basically had the rotenburo to myself. The large indoor bath is also great — it has a huge floor-to-ceiling window facing the forest, and the bath itself is really spacious. The long hallway has lots of paintings and fun optical illusions. The hotel is past its prime, the town feels like it's dying. I recommend visiting while you still can before the hotel deteriorates further.
