An alkaline simple thermal spring led by sodium and calcium with a touch of sulfate and chloride. At pH 8.8 it sits firmly in Japan's beauty-water family, with the slippery, skin-smoothing feel that comes from the alkaline-bicarbonate side of the spectrum. Lightly mineralized at 371.9 mg/kg dissolved solids — a gentle, low-irritation soak. The 31.7 °C source is reheated for bathing as a cold-low spring.

About

Shimobe Onsen has a long association with Takeda Shingen, who allegedly used these cold springs to treat battle wounds, and the alternating hot-and-cold soak that Hashimotoya still practices is said to go back to that tradition. The cold spring here comes out at around 32°C naturally, paired with a drilled hot spring at 50°C, so you move between the two. It's one of only a handful of places in Japan where you can still do this kind of therapeutic cold-mineral-spring bathing.

The woman from the staff greeted me very warmly, and when she saw my Yamanashi stamp book, she gave a discount and returned 100 yen. Higaeri hours are listed as 10:00 to 16:00. They stamp the Yamanashi 100 Onsen book. Bath photos are from the internet, match the real thing. Indoor area. Stuffy inside. 1. Small bath with clear water, temperature around 42. 2. Large bath with clear water, temperature around 31.5. Shimobe Onsen is dying — worth stopping by this place to warm up/cool down and throw in some yen. 12.05.2025
