Kitahama Onsen rises in the Kitahama district of Beppu as a chloride spring led in near-equal measure by sodium, calcium and magnesium, with a bicarbonate sub-type layering in a rounder, softer finish. It is weakly alkaline and easy on the skin, and the certificate records a faintly salty taste at the wellhead. Moderately mineralized at 3,137 mg/kg of dissolved solids, it has real body without feeling heavy. The standout figure is metasilicic acid at 193.8 mg/kg — enough silica to leave the thin moisturizing film that puts this water in Japan's beauty-water family.

135. Guest House Sunline Beppu, Beppu ★ I went for a day-use bath for ¥300. Private bath for ¥1000, I did not take it. Day-use bath is listed from 16:00 to 21:30. They stamp the Beppu onsen stamp rally. Indoor bath. The water is clear, the temperature is 42. It is comfortable to breathe inside. The lobby has a very pleasant atmosphere. A cozy, solid place. 02.05.2024 03.01.2026

Hostel right on the waterfront with access to the promenade, about 15 minutes from Beppu main station. Looks like a renovated old inn. They have shared rooms and private rooms in classic style with tatami and futons, larger and smaller ones — we took one of the smaller private rooms. The room has a sink, toilet is on the floor (felt like we were the only ones on the floor). We set up the futons and bedding ourselves, no breakfast, but there's a cafe on the first floor with coffee, tea, and pastries. Large shared kitchen with dishes and fridges. 2 onsens — men's (orange) and women's (blue), they don't swap, plus a private one for 1000 yen (I only just found out about it, might have been closed). Shampoo, body wash, and hair dryers are provided. Higaeri available, 300 yen. Bath photos from the website, mostly matches, but things are a bit worn out now. Water composition translated from the website. The water was indeed hot, but they do dilute it — can't say to what temperature exactly.
