About

Himewako no Yu is a large day-use bathing complex on the banks of the Kokubu River, away from the bustle of central Kochi. The open-air bath is one of the biggest in the prefecture, open to an unobstructed eastern sky where you catch the sun by day and, later, the moon. Indoors there's a natural onsen tub next to a separate high-concentration carbonated bath, plus a cold bath for cooling off and a shallower tub for kids. The water is treated with monochloramine, which keeps it gentle on the skin and less sharp-smelling than usual. The sauna side is well built out: a high-temperature infrared sauna with automatic loyu steam service, a lower-temperature steam sauna, and, in the women's bath, a salt sauna and a paid ganbanyoku lying-down stone bath. The building has an old-fashioned, Taisho-era feel, with a restaurant built around local ingredients and a free lounge stocked with more than 8,000 manga and magazines, part of it reserved for women.

Super sento with onsen water (very salty and rich in magnesium) and a large relaxation area. Two indoor baths, denki buro (electric bath), two outdoor baths, an outdoor bath with aroma oils, and four barrels outside. Dry sauna with mizuburo (water bath) and steam sauna with herbs. The complex is only a couple of years old, everything is new, and there is a large menu in the restaurant. 900 yen on weekdays or 1200 yen with towels. Downsides - no cosmetics, only shampoos and shower gels. Did not check the ganbanyoku (hot stone spa) area this time, but there are akasuri (scrub) and massage services.
