Sirafuneso Shintaku Ryokan

All seven baths here are kakenagashi, fed straight from the inn's own spring with nothing added or filtered. Men's and women's outdoor baths sit among the trees with a view toward the Northern Alps, and a hinoki-scented indoor bath is open around the clock. There are also two free reservable family baths, Sumomo and Konashi, plus a room category built with its own private open-air bath. The water runs clear from the source but clouds to a soft milky white as the calcium in it reacts with the air, the same process that once gave the spring its name, Shirafune (白船, "white boat"). The ryokan keeps that older name alive as Shirafuneso (白船荘), even though the area itself is now known as Shirahone (白骨). It sits on high ground above the village, ringed by forest, and several reviewers mention old-fashioned, attentive hospitality in a genuinely quiet, remote setting.
