A sodium-led bicarbonate spring layered with chloride and sulfate components, served hot at 61.5 °C. Neutral pH gives a settled, even feel on the skin — it sits in the broader 'beauty-water' family thanks to the bicarbonate base and a remarkable 297 mg/kg of metasilicic acid that leaves a thin silica film behind. The water itself carries a faintly astringent edge and a soft trace of hydrogen sulfide.

About

A cottage camp where each unit comes with its own private outdoor onsen, the water a carbonated sulfur spring (炭酸硫化塩泉) fed straight from the source. Tucking into your own rotenburo (露天風呂) with the mountain panorama around you and nobody else about is the whole appeal, especially for families or anyone who finds shared bathing a bit much. There's also a shared indoor and outdoor public bath on site.

424. Kurasako Onsen Sakura, Minamioguni, Kumamoto (Oda Onsen) I visited for a day trip for 600 yen, located about a 45-minute walk from the center of Kurokawa. The day-use hours are from 12:00 to 17:00. The outdoor stone bath is behind a fence, but you can see the forest beyond it. The water is clear and about 42.5°C. The indoor bath has clear water and is about 44°C. It's quite a good onsen; I thought it would be much simpler. It's worth remembering this day-use option if all the places in Kurokawa are full but you still want to visit. 15.01.2025
