Classification

Sodium-Magnesium-Calcium Bicarbonate-Chloride spring

A municipally operated hot spring (43.3 °C) in central Beppu, classified as a simple thermal water — gentle in composition rather than mineral-heavy. The pH is weakly alkaline, giving the soft, slightly slippery feel that puts this source in the Japanese 'beauty-water' family. Total dissolved solids sit around 915 mg/kg (lightly mineralized), but metasilicic acid is unusually generous at 221 mg/kg, leaving the kind of silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother after bathing. Faintly yellow and clear at the source, with almost no taste or smell — an undemanding, easy-soaking water.

About

Among the municipal onsens, it has the largest bath and is a hot spring located a 5-minute walk from the station. It is said that the bathhouse has existed since around the Meiji era. Close to Beppu Station and the city center, it has been used by many citizens as well as tourists. With the increase in tourists, renovations were made during the Meiji and Taisho eras, and in 1957, the building was rebuilt as a three-story reinforced concrete structure with a large public bath, family rooms, and a hall. The facility, renewed and reopened in August 2014, incorporates dignified and attractive designs befitting its historic hot spring. To ensure comfortable use by many people, it is equipped with an elevator for the visually impaired, multipurpose toilets, and ramps at the entrance, incorporating many barrier-free designs. It secures the largest bath among municipal onsens and offers "Atsuyu" (hot water) and "Nuruyu" (lukewarm water) so visitors can bathe according to their preference. The second floor has a meeting room with flooring that can be used for various purposes.

133. Furosen, Beppu ★★ Municipal onsen for ¥250. Opening hours are listed as 06:30 to 14:00 and 15:00 to 22:30 (except the first Monday of the month). They stamp the Beppu Onsen-do stamp. There is staff, there is a shower, there is no soap. The bath photos are from the internet, and they match. Two adjoining indoor baths with clear water, at 44.5 and 42.5 degrees. It is comfortable to breathe inside. It is recommended to visit in the morning, especially in sunny weather, when daylight comes into the room and creates a very cozy atmosphere. 02.05.2024 28.12.2025 01.04.2026
