Kojoen is a small ryokan right on the shore of Lake Chuzenji, only ten rooms, all facing the water. Bathing is simple: one outdoor and one indoor bath each for men and women, plus a free private bath any guest can use without booking, all fed by the same milky sulfur spring, kept flowing fresh from the source. On a clear day the outdoor bath looks straight out over the lake. The building stands on the former grounds of a foreign ambassador's villa, and although it's aged, it keeps an intimate, old-fashioned charm.
