Kawayu Onsen Kameya Ryokan

An old inn that stood in the middle of Kawayu Onsen, right on the bank of the Otogawa (大塔川), the river where hot water rises through the gravel and people scoop out a bath for themselves in the stones. The business dated back to the Edo period, and the main building, a wooden two-storey with a tiled roof put up in 1928, went onto the national register of tangible cultural properties in 2008. It closed in 2021 after the proprietor died. The building survived, though: an Osaka company bought it, renovated it and reopened it in 2026 as a day-use bath with a cafe, leaving the old Kameya Ryokan sign hanging inside the entrance.
