Classification

Sodium Chloride-Carbonate spring

A hot (47.6 °C) alkaline simple thermal spring. At pH 9.44 the water has the slippery, skin-smoothing feel of Japan's beauty-water family. Mineralization is light at 350 mg/kg, but a generous 58.7 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves the kind of silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother afterwards. A faint hydrogen sulfide note hangs over the bath.

397. Himiko Roman-no-yu, Asakura, Fukuoka Onsen for 530. Operating hours stated as 10:00 to 21:30 (closed Mondays). They stamp the 88 Onsen of Kyushu book. Has a restaurant, a small gym, a stage, a gift shop, event rooms, and a hyperbaric chamber. Bath photos from the internet match reality. There's only an indoor bath zone. Breathing inside is fine, with a slight proper sulfurous onsen smell. 1. Bath with clear water, temperature 41-42. 2. Bath with clear slightly bluish water, slightly carbonated. Temperature 37-38. 3. Two utaseyu (waterfall showers). The baths are modest, but the interior is impressively spacious and has a great old-school atmosphere. Very popular with local elderly folks — it's turned into a kind of community club for them.
