Brief review of Ryokan Shinayoshi - https://maps.app.goo.gl/M3HLXcCtLenyv4eG9 A "tired" but still functioning hotel-ryokan right on the shore of the sea and river in Izu-Atagawa. Few staff, everything is old, some things are a bit dirty. But there are pluses. Views from the rooms are amazing — right onto the sea on one side, and if it's a corner room, onto the river on the other. The onsens are hot and diverse, two large baths in different styles (jungle and stone) alternating between M/F every day. Two FREE kashikiri baths on the roof with sea views! First come, first served. The sauna is quite unique — just a room with onsen water flowing under the floor at around 100 degrees. Very-hot-and-humid. Cold bath available, but the water is warm unfortunately. Food is 6/10. Okay-ish, but the fresh local fish saves the day.

Hotel Shinayoshi sits above the sea in Atagawa Onsen, more of an easygoing hot-spring hotel than a formal ryokan. Its two large baths, indoor and open-air, swap between men and women through the day: one has a small bamboo-pipe waterfall, utaseyu (打たせ湯), plus a tea-infused tub, the other a bincho-charcoal jet bath and a mist sauna fed straight from the spring. Two free rooftop private baths, one hinoki and one ceramic, are open whenever they're free, no booking needed, and run on the cooler, lukewarm side for a long soak. Rooms have their own natural hot-spring bath that runs continuously rather than being filled and drained, and there's a footbath out front facing the water. The building is old and it shows, a Showa-era hotel that guests call dated but characterful rather than run down, the kind of place people return to more for the value and the food than for polish.
