奥奥八九郎温泉おくおくはちきゅうろうおんせん
Shared bathing area for all genders
One of Akita's most remote wild baths, reached by a rough 3-kilometer forest road from the main highway. The spring erupted during oil exploration drilling in the 1970s, and decades of mineral deposits have built up a striking limestone-like platform stained rusty brown. Carbon dioxide bubbles up so vigorously through the pool floor that it feels like a natural jacuzzi, the fizzing is strong enough to push you around. No facilities; bear country, so come prepared.
