Bicarbonate

A sodium-led bicarbonate spring with a chloride tail — classic jūsō-sen territory and exactly the chemistry that earned Ureshino its reputation as one of Japan's three great beauty-water springs. The water emerges remarkably hot (88.3 °C, among Japan's hottest natural sources) and is weakly alkaline, so the soak carries that signature slippery, skin-softening feel. Moderate mineralization (1,905 mg/kg dissolved) keeps the body light, while 140.6 mg/kg of metasilicic acid adds a faint moisturizing film.

Smooth skin

Bicarbonate and alkalinity gently lift dead keratin while silica hydrates, leaving skin smooth. This is the basis of the beautifying-water (bijin-no-yu 美人の湯) reputation.

Warmth eases stiffness and raises the pain threshold. Radon and sulfate springs show the strongest evidence for joint and muscle pain.

Salt forms a film on the skin that slows heat loss, so the warmth lingers long after the bath (the classic heat-keeping water, nettō 熱の湯).
