The water at Hakuju no Yu (白寿の湯) is iron-rich and draws from 750 meters underground. It comes out clear at the source but turns deep reddish-brown when it meets air and heat, and leaves a crust of mineral crystals along the bath edges that regulars treat as a hallmark of the place. The indoor bath runs hot; there is also an outdoor bath with an open view. The name carries a wish: hakuju (白寿) means living to 99 in good health. Around the baths, the ofuro-cafe format fills out the day with a lounge holding floor-to-ceiling manga shelves, hammocks, free electric massage chairs, and outdoor terrace seating. The restaurant focuses on fermented and koji-based food.
