510. Yumotokan, Izu (pt.1) ★★★ Stayed overnight. Had double dinner and breakfast, kaiseki served in a separate space, everything was great. Listed among the "secret" Hitou onsens. Higaeri advertised at 800 yen from 12:00 to 14:30. This ryokan was deeply beloved by Kawabata Yasunari, the outstanding Japanese writer and Nobel Prize laureate in literature. The ryokan has a dedicated memorial room with photographs. The staff specifically talks about this and emphasizes it — very respectable. The room is very pleasant with a balcony overlooking the river. Falling asleep to the sound of the river is super cozy. Service is also great, Japanese staff with minimal English. About the onsens: 1. Private outdoor stone bath. Absolutely top-tier. No reservation, first-come-first-served. I got in both in the evening and morning without issues. Maximally natural view of the river and forest, incredibly atmospheric. Clear water, very faint proper sulfurous onsen smell. Temperature 39-40. 09.05.2025 10.05.2025
