About

Seifuso is a large ryokan in Awara Onsen with separate garden open-air baths for men and women, each paired with several tub styles, an octagonal tub, a flower-viewing tub, a Shigaraki-ware pottery tub, plus an indoor bath and a sauna (no cold bath in these halls). A second hall, Komorebi-no-Yu (木もれ陽の湯), swaps between men and women through the day and adds a carbonated-spring bath, a mist sauna, and a cold plunge. Two reservable tatami-floor private baths and a free footbath by a bamboo grove round out the options, and the Ro-an (蘆庵) suite and the Tomi-no-Kaze (十三の風) rooms have their own open-air or semi-open-air tubs of natural onsen water (one Tomi-no-Kaze room type runs kakenagashi, drawing straight from the source). The spring itself is a salty, warming water that several bathers describe as running mild rather than hot, good for a long soak. Awara Onsen, where the ryokan stands, opened in 1883 and was a favorite of the poet Yosano Akiko; Seifuso keeps an older building alongside buffet dinners cooked live in front of guests.
