Suiranrou (翠嵐楼) sits on the banks of the Kuma River in Hitoyoshi, and it has a real piece of history behind it: the founding proprietor drilled the first spring here in 1910, which started what became Hitoyoshi Onsen. Three distinct sources feed the baths today, all free-flowing (kakenagashi, 源泉かけ流し), and the water is well known locally for leaving skin soft and smooth. The open-air baths look out over the river; there is also a sauna, reservable private outdoor baths, and some rooms come with their own semi-open-air onsen bath. The third source has a faint earthy, peat-like scent that is unusual for the area. The ryokan reopened in early 2023 after flood damage in 2020.
