Kintokan (金湯館) sits at 1,050 meters in the mountains of Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park and is the last inn at Kirizumi Onsen (霧積温泉), a spring area that once drew Meiji-era visitors. Getting here takes some effort: you drive a narrow mountain road to a parking area, then walk about 30 minutes or wait for the inn's shuttle. The building has the worn, lived-in feel of a place that has been running for well over a century, run by the same family. The indoor baths are basic retro tile rooms (no rotenburo, no showers) with clear spring water that coats the skin in fine bubbles. Meals come in your room, the water runs continuously, and there is no Wi-Fi. That is more or less the point.
