A sodium bicarbonate spring of the jūsō-sen family, blended from two wellheads (Kaminoyu and Shimonoyu) and emerging hot at 43.3 °C. Weakly alkaline at pH 7.8 with a generous bicarbonate load, it sits squarely in Japan's beauty-water tradition — soft, slippery on the skin even though the water itself is colorless, tasteless, and odorless at the source. Moderately mineralized at 1,502 mg/kg dissolved solids, it is the kind of gentle, skin-smoothing water that earned Ryujin its place among Japan's three celebrated bijin-no-yu springs.

About

Kirari Ryujin is a roomy, hotel-style inn on Ryujin Onsen (龍神温泉), one of the three springs Japan traditionally counts as bijin-no-yu (美人の湯), the waters said to be kind to the skin. You get the point on the way in: sodium bicarbonate water, weakly alkaline and properly slippery. The main bath is big and full of daylight, with an open-air bath wrapped all the way around it on both the men's and women's sides, plus a sauna. The spring itself is credited to Kobo Daishi (弘法大師) some 1,300 years ago, tipped off in a dream, the story goes, by the dragon king the valley is named after.

673. Kirari Ryujin, Ryujin Onsen, Wakayama ★ Visited for higaeri for 800. Higaeri hours are 11:00-15:00. They stamp the Wakayama 88 Onsen book. They sell the Wakayama 12 Onsen stamp book. Japanese staff, very friendly - let me in outside the higaeri slot (because of the Wakayama 12 book), handled the stamps very carefully. Photos of baths from the internet match. Water composition table from the internet (consistent across two different reviews). 1. Outdoor stone bath in a semicircle from the building corner. View is limited by a fence and bushes, but you can still see the forest on the hills. Clear water, very slight slippery/soapy feel. Temperature around 41.5. 2. Indoor area. Breathing inside is bearable. 2.1. Bath with clear water, very slight slippery/soapy feel. Temperature around 41. 2.2. Sauna. Pleasant place, worth keeping in mind when visiting the village. 08.11.2025
