Classification

Sodium Bicarbonate-Chloride spring

A gentle simple thermal spring, lightly mineralized at about 985 mg/kg of dissolved solids. It emerges hot at 52.3 °C and is weakly alkaline at pH 8.3, giving the soft, slippery feel of the Japanese beauty-water family. A generous 175 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves a thin silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother.

About

REX HOTEL Beppu sits close to the beach with its own natural onsen spring. The signature bath is a top-floor open-air rotenburo (露天風呂) named Tenkyu Rotenburo Raku (天空露天風呂「楽」), where you can soak while looking out over Beppu Bay, the city lights at night, or sunrise in the morning. There is also an indoor bath on the same floor. All 46 rooms face the ocean.

155. REX HOTEL, Beppu Stayed overnight. A good, serious hotel. Didn't take dinner in order to rush onsen stamps. They don't stamp the onsen-do passport and don't really understand what it's about. The onsen is on the upper floors and it's excellent. There's an indoor bath with clear water, hot-, breathing comfortable. The view from the indoor bath window exists but isn't particularly notable. The outdoor bath has a gorgeous seamless view of Beppu Bay. My late evening visit happened in cloudy weather with fog, which created an amazing effect. You end up looking into darkness where nothing is visible, yet you feel the infinity beyond a thin veil of steam from the water. It really feels like you're staring and getting absorbed into some kind of portal. Water is clear, temperature hot. In the morning the fog effect remained, but I liked that view too - starting the morning with such a view was excellent. An excellent hotel with a scenic onsen overlooking the bay. If the criterion is purely the seamless view from the bath - one of the two best options in Beppu among the scenic hotels I've visited.
