A gentle simple thermal spring, lightly mineralized at about 985 mg/kg of dissolved solids. It emerges hot at 52.3 °C and is weakly alkaline at pH 8.3, giving the soft, slippery feel of the Japanese beauty-water family. A generous 175 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves a thin silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother.

REX HOTEL Beppu sits close to the beach with its own natural onsen spring. The signature bath is a top-floor open-air rotenburo (露天風呂) named Tenkyu Rotenburo Raku (天空露天風呂「楽」), where you can soak while looking out over Beppu Bay, the city lights at night, or sunrise in the morning. There is also an indoor bath on the same floor. All 46 rooms face the ocean.

155. REX HOTEL, Beppu ★★ Stayed overnight. There are day-trip plans with meals + onsen. A good modern hotel. I did not have dinner, so I could rush. It is not included in Onsen-do Beppu, they do not stamp the 88-onsen stamp rally. The onsen is on the upper floors and it is very good. There is an indoor bath, the water is clear, hot, and comfortable to breathe in. There is a view from the indoor bath window, but it is not very important. The outdoor bath has a gorgeous seamless infinity view of Beppu Bay. The late evening visit happened in cloudy weather with fog, which created a very cool effect. It feels like you are looking into darkness, where nothing can be seen, but at the same time you feel infinity beyond the light veil of steam from the water. It really feels like you are staring and getting absorbed into some kind of portal. The water is clear, and the temperature is hot. In the morning the fog effect remained, and I also really liked that view. A very cool hotel with a scenic onsen overlooking the bay. Recommended for a day trip or for staying overnight. 29.04.2024 30.04.2024
