Classification

Sodium Bicarbonate spring

A simple thermal spring drawn from the "Yoshimatsu Kawahigashi No. 5" source in Tsurumaru, Yusui. The water emerges hot at 62.5 °C and is mildly alkaline, soft on the skin, with a faint pale-yellow tint. It is unusually rich in metasilicic acid (170.5 mg/kg), which leaves the kind of silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother and places it squarely in Japan's beauty-water family.

372. Maeda Hot Spring, Tsurumaru, Kagoshima Old-timer onsen for 200 yen. Operating hours listed as 07:00 to 20:00. They stamp the 88 Onsen of Kyushu book. I had trouble finding the owner to pay and get my stamp (the couple apparently lives in the house next to the onsen). There was also a gang of very curious but skittish young cats running around the property. Inside: a bath with clear water, temperature around 46. There's also a small reservoir with water at 49.7 by my measurement. Breathing inside is excellent — it was cold and fresh like being outdoors.
