Boyokaku sits on Amakusa's west coast where rooms face the East China Sea, and the sunsets here have earned a place on Japan's "100 best sunsets" list. The communal bath is indoors: a wide granite hall decorated with stained glass, with a sauna and an utaseyu (打たせ湯, a standing jet-waterfall) alongside the main soak. No outdoor bath. The spring is Shimoda Onsen, a government-designated national health resort spring known for its smooth, gentle water. Seven onsen-sommelier-certified staff are on hand to talk guests through the spring. The inn has been open since 1935.
