Kaniyu Onsen, colloquially Kani-yu, or "crab onsen." One of the legendary sulfur spots. Key features: - Pure nature, fresh air. You can't drive anywhere near here - shuttle from the parking lot or hike in. - Sulfuric sulfur - Kinugawa River right in front of the onsen - 5 different springs, some with significantly different compositions - 7 konyoku rotenburo in one establishment, swimwear prohibited - All baths 24/7 - Onsen pool, though it's a bit dirty and not really needed with baths like these - Low price - Technically higaeri is possible - Free kashikiri for overnight guests - Hereditary friendly owner Drawbacks: - The building has seen better days and hasn't been renovated in a long time - Food is okay, not amazing A must-visit for all lovers of sulfur, nature, and rivers - go before it falls apart completely. Best season is momiji, but summers here are relatively cool and pleasant too. If you don't appreciate konyoku, it'll be boring.
