Takaraso (たから荘) sits in a 300-year-old thatched farmhouse built in the kabutodukuri (兜造り) style, a registered tangible cultural property tucked into the mountains west of Tokyo. The inn is a member of Nihon Hitou wo Mamoru Kai (日本秘湯を守る会), the association that looks after Japan's lesser-known hot springs. The indoor bath has large windows looking out over the river gorge below. The water is alkaline and faintly sulfurous, smooth on the skin. There is no outdoor bath.
