Classification

Sodium Chloride spring

A scorching 93 °C source in Beppu's Kannawa district — among Japan's hottest natural wells. Chemically a sodium chloride spring with weak acidity (pH around 3.3 to 3.4), the water reads colorless and clear at the spout but carries a faint salty-bitter tang and a hint of iron on the tongue. Roughly 584 mg/kg of metasilicic acid layers in a thin silica film that leaves skin noticeably smoother once you cool back down.

83. Oniishi no Yu, Beppu Onsen near the hells. Entrance is at the same place as the hells — turn left and walk a bit. From the rest area you can see one of the hells. Stamp available — they even have a framed black towel. There are three baths. Indoor bath is clear, water is mild — between warm and hot. Breathing is fine. Two outdoor baths — clear water, temperature is hot-. The first is a rectangular bath on the first floor, the second is on a balcony on the second floor, but there's no real view — maybe a touch of steampunk. If you're near the hells or need a stamp, worth stopping by. No particular reason to visit specifically.
