Tsuki no Shizuka is a small ryokan, twenty rooms, at Utsukushigahara Onsen on the edge of Matsumoto. The large baths are separated for men and women, each opening onto its own outdoor bath, and the spring water is soft and mild on the skin rather than sharp or mineral-heavy. Rooms in the newer wing each have a private hinoki (檜) tub fed by the same spring; the annex is built around a farmhouse moved here around 250 years ago, with high ceilings and thick old beams, while the main building keeps to plain Western-style rooms with beds. The spring itself is old: it appears in the Nihon Shoki as Tsukama-no-yu (束間の湯), was later praised in poetry as Shiraito-no-yu (白糸の湯), served as a retreat for the lords of Matsumoto Castle, and locals still call it Goten-no-yu (御殿の湯), the palace bath.
