Arayu Onsen (新湯温泉, "new spring") opened in 1720, one of the five historic springs grouped along the slopes of Mt. Kurikoma in Miyagi. The name came about simply because it was the last of them to open. Kurikomaso has kept to the old toji (湯治) tradition ever since: the water flows straight from the source without recirculation. It comes out slightly cloudy with a faint sulfur note, easy to soak in for a long time without feeling worn out. There are indoor and outdoor baths, and a private reserved bath available for both day visitors and overnight guests. The family still runs it.
