About

Mikurigaike Onsen sits at 2,410 meters on the Murodo plateau in Tateyama, making it the highest natural hot spring in Japan. The spring rises in Jigokudani (地獄谷, Jigokudani), the active volcanic valley a short walk away, and the milky white sulfurous water runs straight into the indoor baths without recirculation. There are separate baths for men and women, both with views out over the alpine landscape. The inn has been here since 1957, and it is only reachable by the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, with no car access to this elevation. The facility is open from roughly mid-April to mid-November.

You have probably already been here since the route is popular, but I really liked Mikurigaike Onsen みくりが池温泉, the highest altitude onsen in Japan (~2410m). I went this past weekend. In the women's bath, there are two small baths, quite hot, one hotter than the other (about 40-42 degrees Celsius), with water rich in sulfur, coming directly from a nearby source. I highly recommend the main onsen restaurant; the food is very delicious, and the green tea and sake are some of the best I've tried in Japan! You can stay there as well; there are rooms and a good souvenir shop.
